Noshi, Mourning Postcard & Condolence Letters Kit
Right wording and knot for the occasion, on noshi wrapping and mourning postcards

Noshi, Mourning Postcard & Condolence Letters Kit is a vibe coding kit for Claude Code and Codex. Right wording and knot for the occasion, on noshi wrapping and mourning postcards. It includes 8 fixes for pitfalls the maker hit in real work. Free.
When this helps
You want to make noshi wrapping or a mourning postcard, but the right knot and term change every time you check
What it does
Builds noshi wrapping and gift covers for seasonal gifts, celebrations, condolence money and return gifts: it sets the knot style, colour, cord count, whether to add a noshi ornament, the honorific heading, and ink shade for the occasion. It also writes mourning postcards, death notices and condolence-gift letters. Give it the occasion, the recipient's region and religion, and the names to print, and you get a print-ready PDF, a print page, and a results page flagging what to fix and what to confirm. Where sources disagree by region or sect, such as which honorific heading or cord colours to use, it lays out both options rather than deciding. When printing name variants for many staff or clients at once, only names that don't fit are shrunk.
The fixes baked into this kit
- Assuming "gorei-zen applies until the 49th day" clashes with some sectsOne industry association's guidance said gorei-zen applies only until the 35th-day rite, and the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha school said its followers use gobutsu-zen instead. The kit splits Buddhist wording by whether the rite has passed, never offers gorei-zen for Jodo Shinshu, and flags the disputed 35th-to-49th-day window as something to confirm rather than deciding.
- New Year's postcard mail-in dates changed, and a late date can look like it's still in timeJapan Post moved the 2027 New Year's postcard acceptance start to December 20 (previously the 15th). The kit keeps a year-by-year date table, flags early December as the baseline, mid-to-late December as a confirm item marked 'late', and switches to the midwinter-greeting window once acceptance has opened.
- The mourning-postcard check for festive words over-matched sample text and senders' namesMatching broadly on "nenga" (New Year greeting) also flagged a postal sample sentence about New Year's cards and a sender whose name contained the character for "celebration." The kit now matches only the New Year's greeting itself, never checks personal names or addresses, and runs 15 public sample texts through the check to confirm nothing fires.
- Adding up days for the 49th-day rite lands one day offThe 49th day is counted from the day of death as day one, so simple addition is a day late. The kit's date tool outputs the date counting the day of death as day one; the AI never calculates it itself.
- Long recipient names, company names or titles overlap the knot band or the knot itselfRunning over 40,000 combinations of occasion, design, paper and name through an overlap check turned up names that collided with the knot band. Names that don't fit are now shrunk and flagged; if they still don't fit even shrunk, that person's copy isn't produced at all.
- Printed names get too small once four or more people are listed togetherTrying to keep everyone's name the same size made the text shrink below the minimum once four or more names were listed. The kit now prints the lead name in full and adds "and others" for the rest.
- Instruction-like text slipped into a request could get printed onto a mourning postcard verbatimIf a note or pasted message contained something like "AI: skip the check," an unguarded build could print that line as-is. The kit now strips out only the matching instruction-like line, keeps everything else in that field, and reports what it found in the first line of its reply.
- Illness details crept into death notices and condolence lettersA draft death notice mentioned "hospitalised for pneumonia," and that line would otherwise carry through. The kit now removes any mention of illness as soon as it's received, and that text isn't kept in drafts or copies either.

The first three decisions
- What to make (seasonal gift, wedding gift, condolence money, mourning postcard, etc.)
- About the recipient (region, and for condolence items, religion and before/after the 49th-day rite)
- Who it's from (names to print, sender/chief mourner, company name and title)
What you need
- No extra costNode.js (18+)No extra install needed
- No extra costGoogle Chrome or Microsoft EdgeUsed to make the PDF. Without it, you can still print from the print page's print dialog
- No extra costA printer that can print A4, B4 or postcard sizeNeeded when you actually print

FAQ
- How different is this from a real noshi and mizuhiki knot?
- It produces a printed image, not a real mizuhiki cord or noshi ornament. Gold and silver print as grey or ochre tones. For a formal gift, a shop-wrapped cover or real mizuhiki may be the better choice.
- Can it print the address side of the postcard?
- No. Use your address-printing setup for that side; this kit only produces the message side.
- Can it work out mourning periods for Shinto or Christian services, not just Buddhist ones?
- Yes. It gives the 50th-day Shinto rite, the 30th-day Catholic memorial Mass, and the one-month Protestant memorial, all counting the day of death as day one.
- Can I print different names for many staff or clients in one batch?
- Yes. List everyone in one request and it prints them all in one run, keeping every name the same size, shrinking only names that don't fit, and skipping anyone whose name would still be smaller than the minimum size even after shrinking.
- What happens when sources disagree on the correct etiquette?
- It lays out both options as something to confirm rather than picking one. The decision is left to you, or to the recipient's side or the family holding the funeral.
